Cruelty Behind the Mask

PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) – Masked monkeys in vulgar costumes perform daily on the streets of Jakarta while chained, begging for money. Seemingly tolerated by Indonesians, the practice is usually abhorred by tourists, who can come across the spectacle within hours of arriving.

De documentaire Stand van de sterren (Position Among the Stars) van de Nederlandse regisseur Leonard Retel Helmrich opent op 17 november in Pathé Tuschinski het elf dagen durende festival in Amsterdam. Dat maakte festivaldirecteur Ally Derks vandaag tijdens een persconferentie bekend. De film is opgenomen in de IDFA Competition for Feature-Length Documentary.
De stand van de zon
This is the first part of Leonard Retel Helmrich's trilogy about modern Indonesia. It was followed by Stand van de maan and Stand van de sterren (2010). De stand van de zon is the first portrait of the Sjamsuddin family, whom Helmrich would continue to follow in the subsequent films. Here we get to know family members Rumidjah, her two sons Bakti and Dwi, and her grandchildren, set against the background of the Reformasi, the period of political instability that followed the departure of President Suharto. -

Volgens regisseur Leonard Retel Helmrich moet zijn documentaire De stand van de zon, over het leven in Indonesië, in de eerste plaats als speelfilm worden bekeken. De stand van de zon gaat deze maand in première in DocuZone.
at De stand van de zon is gerealiseerd, mag een wonder heten. Tijdens de researchfase, in 1995, werd Retel Helmrich in Indonesië opgepakt toen hij een studentendemonstratie filmde. Omdat hij Nederlander was, en misschien wel geholpen door het aanstaande staatsbezoek van de koningin in verband met de vijftigjarige onafhankelijkheid, kwam hij na vier dagen met de schrik vrij. Later hoorde hij dat de student die zijn tas droeg was gemarteld. Retel Helmrich werd op het vliegtuig gezet als persona non grata; een status die destijds achttien jaar opgeld deed. Dankzij de inspanningen van een broer, die eerder contact met de autoriteiten had over zijn vrijlating, kon Retel Helmrich niettemin in 1996 het land weer in. De man die onder het regime van Soeharto het land werd uitgeschopt, was op tijd terug om de ondergang van datzelfde regime op film te registreren. Retel Helmrich: "Ik vond dat wel een mooi soort wraak."

Up-close portrait of exuberant, controversial monkey shows in the slums of Jakarta. And if the apes are treated roughly, their trainers hardly get any better. The struggle for life is hard, but also a feast for the eyes. Social realism with a sense of humour.

This documentary is no ordinary nature film. In Indonesia, wild monkeys are captured and taken to the hectic streets of Jakarta where puppeteers use them in spectacular shows. However, these entertainers are not much freer than their monkeys, who are forced to wear childlike masks. The film paints a disconcerting picture of a metropolis where both people and animals are exploited and the line between them has blurred.

The selected works all shed a different light on the relations between animals and humans. In Masked Monkey — The Evolution of Darwin’s Theory, wild monkeys are captured and taken to the slums of Jakarta to entertain. Both wearing masks during the spectacular monkey shows, the animals and their trainers seem similar in that they are all subject to exploitation as they struggle to survive on the street.

Met de groeiende armoede in Indonesië verbreidt ook de islam zich meer en meer. Fundamentalistische organisaties vervullen in Indonesië een actieve en sociale rol. Eén van de terreinen waarop ze actief zijn is het opzetten van scholen. Alleen al op Centraal Java is het aantal moslimscholen de afgelopen vijftien jaar verdubbeld.
